Philodendron 'Peru' (also known as Philodendron 'Karstenianum')

General Characteristics:

Appearance: This is a very unique and highly sought-after Philodendron species. It's distinguished by its thick, rigid, and deeply textured leaves that are a stunning, dark, and glossy green. The texture of the leaves is its most defining feature, with prominent, deeply grooved veins that give it a bubbly or corrugated appearance.

Growth Habit: It is a climbing, vining plant. When young, it grows in a compact, bushy form. As it matures, it will begin to climb, and providing a moss pole or trellis will encourage the plant to produce larger, more mature leaves.

Size: It can grow quite large with proper support, with leaves that can get up to a foot long or more in optimal conditions.

Low Maintenance: While it is not as common as other Philodendrons, it is relatively easy to care for and is a great choice for those who want a unique plant that doesn't require a lot of fuss.

Care Requirements:

Light: This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate medium light, its growth will be slower, and the leaves may not develop their full texture. Avoid direct sun, as it can burn the leaves.

Water: Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. It's important to let the soil dry out a bit between waterings to prevent root rot. Philodendrons don't like to sit in soggy soil.

Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining, and airy potting mix. A mixture of standard potting soil, perlite, and a bit of orchid bark or coco coir will provide the necessary aeration and drainage.

Temperature: It prefers warm, consistent temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Keep it away from cold drafts from windows or air conditioners.

Humidity: As a tropical plant, it loves high humidity. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or using a humidifier.

Fertilizer: During the active growing season (spring and summer), feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter.

Toxicity: All parts of the Philodendron plant are toxic if ingested due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
